The Association of Fil-am Teachers of America was founded in 1989 by about 300 teachers because of a need to update their visas in the USA. The first set of officers were elected and the teachers first and biggest accomplishment was the extension of the H1 visa from 5 to 6 years. After that the teachers initiated the “Balikturo” or return to teach. There are other projects being conducted by the association such as the “Paaralan sa Konsulado” or Summer School at the Consulate. Then a search for “Ulirang Guro” (Outstanding Filipino Teachers) of America was founded in 2008, recognizing the outstanding achievements of Filipino teachers in the field of Education.
